The big match!

Well, we got the semi final we’d all been dreaming of; a big clash against our big rivals India. Some of my friends said they’d have preferred it if we’d met (and beaten) them in the final, but I don’t think I could have taken that kind of pressure. After all, the final is such a big match anyway, it doesn’t need the extra heating oil of a local rivalry for it to really explode.
We had it much easier in our quarter-final yesterday, but I don’t really thing that counts for anything. There are a few days off for both teams now, so even though the Australians pushed India further and harder during their battle today, by the time the first ball is bowled on Wednesday both teams will be refreshed and at their peak. Knowing how the Pakistani team often fail to keep their focus during tournaments I almost wish that the West Indies had given us more of a contest. The game was over so quickly and so easily, that I can well imagine Afridi and the boys kicking back, imaging they have the tournament all sewn up…
I’m trying hard not to get too far ahead of myself, but when you get to the latter stages of any competition, in any sport, your mind can’t help but turn towards the possibility of making the final – and who you would want to meet to give your team the best chance of securing the trophy! I think South Africa will definitely get through their quarter final against New Zealand, but the other match, between England and Sri Lanka, is much harder to call. Normally I would go with home advantage every time, and the English players will have to cope with a very vocal crowd in Colombo. But they have been so lucky in so many matches already this tournament that I feel you can’t rule them out! It’s for that same reason that I hope we aren’t facing Andrews Strauss'team if we do make it past India… Mind you, combine our unpredictability and England’s recent last-ditch victories and defeats and you’d certainly have a final to remember.
