Retired or not? What say you Shahid?
Pakistan cricket has the ability to frustrate even the most patient individual. Pakistan cricket had always been an individualistic affair. Sure, the players played as a team but it was the performance of individuals that made the ultimate difference. There were numerous instances where people just did not get along despite playing in the same team. The differences between Imran Khan and Javed Miandad are legendary. One was a bowler and the other was a batsman and the two sides never seemed to meet.

The differences and problems were not restricted to players alone. There were innumerable instances where players did not get along with the board authorities who ran cricket in Pakistan. However, at no point of time did any player walkout of the team. There was always the fear that he would be replaced by a better player and his career would come to an end. There was no love lost between the administrators and the players but people never took their place for granted in the team.
Sadly, Shahid Afridi’s recent retirement drama has underlined how people are taking their place for granted in the team. The change of guard at the top of Pakistan Cricket Board has resulted in Shahid Afridi’s announcing that his retirement was conditional and that he is back in the fray again. Literature stands were agog with newspaper reports and other magazines trying to find out whether Shahid Afridi’s is back to stay or not.
Some people say that Pakistan cricket is in this condition because of political issues getting mixed up with the administration of cricket. Well, politics was always a part of Pakistan cricket. It is only recently that things have gone to the dogs and the people are retiring left right and center only to state that they are back in the fray when their mood suits them.
